With the recent increase in unemployment figures, many are finding themselves without work after being employed for years and others are looking for new positions because they believe that the company or organization they are with is not financially stable. One of the first steps that one needs to take in looking for a new job is getting one's resume ready. You should certainly keep your resume up-to-date, but you also need to make sure that your resume will stand-out above the rest.
Here are five ways to make your resume stand out:
Review Your References - If you plan on sending out your references, make sure that your references know that they might be contacted by potential employers that are considering hiring you in the near future. You should also include their job titles as well as the companies or organizations that they are with so that the potential employer knows why your references' opinions of you matters.
Examples of good references are coworkers, previous employers, university professors, and individuals that you have business relationships. Bad examples of references include family members, friends, and individuals outside of the industry that you are applying for a job in. If you have any references in the bad references column, you might want to consider finding better references that will appear more respectable and professional in the industry that you are looking to be employed in.
List Your Skills - Any potential employer will want to know what you are capable of doing. This is especially important in positions where you will be production positions, such as graphic design or computer programming. You should list specific technologies and skills that you are familiar with, as well as how well you know them. You should your skill ability as basic, intermediate, or proficient. Feel free to use your own synonyms in place of these.
A good example of this would be Proficient in Web Development - XHTML, CSS, Content Management Systems, ASP.NET. This will let the potential employer know what specific technologies that you can effectively make use of, as well as how you would rate yourself at doing them.
Effectively Communicate Your Accomplishments - When listing your previous jobs, make sure to list what you accomplished at those positions rather than just what you were responsible for. A bad example would be was responsible for ensuring workplace safety. A good example would be decreased number of workplace accidents by 50% by implementing
