Abraham Lincoln's famous quotes

by Joshua Greene

Created on: May 11, 2009

Abraham Lincoln is arguably the greatest president that the United States has ever had. He has many famous quotations that have been repeated over the last 150 years by the leaders of the world. His words have had impact on each and every American and many of his quotations are well known by many individuals, whether they know it or not. Many of his quotations are well known and can even be seen in motion pictures and are popularly referenced, and others are not so well known and you may only hear once or twice in a lifetime. One thing holds true however, that all of his quotations hold a nugget of truth or a feeling of hope and motivation that help us in our everyday life.

The following are some of his famous quotations:

"...Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth." - Gettysburg Address, November 19th of 1863

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." - Also from the Gettysburg Address, November 19th of 1863

"This leads to the further reflection, that no other human occupation opens so wide a field for the profitable and agreeable combination of labor with cultivated thought, as agriculture. I know of nothing so pleasant to the mind, as the discovery of anything which is at once new and valuable- nothing which so lightens and sweetens toil, as the hopeful pursuit of such discovery. And how vast, and how varied a field is agriculture, for such discovery. The mind, already trained to thought, in the country school, or higher school, cannot fail to find there an exhaust-less source of profitable enjoyment." - Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society,on September 30th, 1859

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." - attributed to Abraham Lincoln

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." - Attributed to Abraham Lincoln

"As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy." - Attributed to Abraham Lincoln

"Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance or insignificance can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down
