Can you hear the people sing?
Well, pretend you can't.
Pretend someone tore out your eardrums and cut out your tongue.
A day in the life is staring at flapping lips and angry eyes,
watching hands day after day proclaim:
LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE
LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE
YOU HAVE NO TONGUE
BUT YOU MUST SING
Wouldn't you get tired?
Wouldn't you envision standing up,
reaching out,
signing SHUT UP,
tearing out eardrums,
and cutting out tongues, saying,
LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE?
WHY DON'T THEY LEARN MINE?

Poetry: Deafness
How loud is silence
Quick moving hands,
sign excitement.
Mouths moving
with quiet sentences,
flow to my ears.
Faces weighted

A SILENT WORLD
What would the world be without sound?
Could you find contentment in silence?
Would you miss the voice
by Lisa Kates
Alone in crowded rooms
As
Mouths move
Silent as falling snow.
Sitting in a corner
Watching gestures speak
Living in dreams
by Tenebris
Bespeak me, brother
I cannot hear:
Your entreaties fall
On deaf ears.
I cry out for
Your voice
Your touch
Lost
In the voice
Of my
Hollow ears
Unable to hear
Blocked from anger
Saved from fear
I loved you then
I love you now
People wonder why
Ask me how
