Reflections: Going to the beach to find inner peace

Go to the beach  and let the sea breeze and the water at the shoreline whirl around you, bringing you a sense of inner peace. Visiting the beach first thing in the morning or in the evening may be best time to  find the serenity that will free your spirit and  bring  you a lasting sense of personal satisfaction and inner peace.

The beach is one of the best places to achieve a relaxing state of mind, body, and spirit. The forces of wind, water, and shape the coastline, the deposits of sand, and our inner selves. The sea, so calming and nurturing, yet capable of raging storms and extreme energy, mirrors our ranges of mood and changing levels of personal strength. The mere sound of the waves of the sea can rock you to the most peaceful sleep you can ever recall  and a tranquility that is unique to the ocean setting.

A morning walk along a quiet beach and the search for the perfect shell is  holding out for the perfect relationship, job situation, or circumstance, set in our minds long ago. Somewhere in the walk comes the urge to stop and look out across the water to the horizon. How comforting it is to know that no matter what, that view will most likely still be there and that people of all generations have stood on the shore somewhere in the world and have found peace and comfort in that unshakable presence of the ocean, the sky above, and the horizon at the farthest reach of our vision.

Nature speaks to us at the ocean and that expands our inner peace to sheer joy. Perhaps it is God speaking to us or the universe putting its arms around us to show us how very important we are. And if we get too serious about ourselves, we have those gulls flying around us. Are they laughing?

A trip to the ocean and understanding how the beach was formed and has sustained itself is such a model of balance, the kind of balance we seek in our own lives. Even the beaches that have suffered heart-breaking storm damage or erosion still have that unshakable hope of renewal and lasting importance in the world. For these reasons, we identify with the beach environment and how it envelops our senses and does its magic to help us find or reunite with  inner peace.
