of canines and just a few everyday living situations, and is certainly not as expedient. Cesar Millan has transcended traditional training as we know it. He has filled in the blanks that basic obedience training leave open, such as how to influence an unleashed dog aggressively approaching you and your pet and how to keep your pet from responding (something I have found handy more than once), how to handle a frightened pet, and also how to encourage the behavior you want while discouraging unfavorable behavior by communicating in the canine's first language, which is body language and projection of energy, not vocal commands (how effective would your therapist be if she spoke to you in only Japanese?). All of these things add up to a shortcut on the once time consuming road of dog training. Most important, are that Cesar's methods include a large portion of dogs that many traditional trainers would reject. Cesar's methods make what many of us once thought impossible, very possible indeed.
It is also important to acknowledge what Cesar and Victoria share. They are advocates for canines, shelters and rescue organizations across the globe. Both counsel families as to what isn't working, explaining why. Both utilize methods that result in solving the problem, and both reach into the homes across America (and beyond) advised people further about the importance of understanding the way canines think and why training is so important, and encourage people to find a trainer to work with. They have given so many dogs a second chance that would have been otherwise given away, put in shelters, or worse, euthanized due to the unruly behavior that many well-intending pet owners unintentionally encourage. Both are advocates for adopting from shelters and encourage pet adoption, as well as helped with canine victims of natural disasters, and even shedding light on the horrific realities of puppy mills. They have revealed to so many that it is never really the canine with the problem; it is the human in charge. Their enlightenment has sent shock waves of awareness that has reached millions. So much of what they have done is invaluable.
But down the road, in a cozy condo, the debate ensues. Victoria or Cesar? Kate loves Victoria Stilwell's "It's Me or the Dog," exhibiting her "Nanny 911" style methods and remains an avid fan while John continues as a "Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" follower passionately watching as Cesar shushes questionable canines and their owners into becoming balanced beings.
I will, of course continue to learn from Cesar and Victoria, and from Marble, that third level advanced obedience graduate I mentioned earlier, and hope that Lola's humans will soon see the benefit in learning from both Victoria and Cesar to create one very happy and obedient Chocolate Labrador.
