Point guards has been around since the conception of the NBA. They are the players who are the "mind" behind the game and are often referred to as "one" , "ball handler", or "court general". Point guards are so important to any team as they are considered as the coach on the floor and is responsible for handling and distributing the ball to his teammates and is comparable to the quarterback position in football. Teams often make or break it with their point guards. More often than not, teams with better point guards do better than teams who don't. Over the years, the NBA has seen great point guards. Here are 5 of the top point guards of all-time in the NBA.
5.) Isiah Thomas. Played for the Detroit Pistons from 1981 to 1994, Thomas has led the Motor City team to 2 NBA titles and turned the Pistons franchise around. In his 13 year career, Thomas amassed a total of 18,822 points, 9,061 assists, and 1,861 steals and held averages of 19.2 points, 9.2 assists, and 1.9 steals a game in a total of 979 regular season games. Thomas has placed the Detroit Pistons into the NBA playoffs map and led the team to NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. In his career, Thomas was named in the Rookie first team in 1982, the All-Star team 12 times, an All-Star MVP twice (1984 and 1986), and 3-time All-NBA first team (1984-86). Thomas was also named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in the NBA in 1996 and was named in Naismith basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
4.) Oscar Robertson. Popularly known as "The Big O" or "O-Train", Oscar Robertson is the only player in NBA history who averaged a triple-double in a single season and has helped revolutionize the guard position. Only in his second season in the NBA, Robertson averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists in the 1961-62 season. Played in the NBA for the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks for a total of 14 seasons, Robertson finished his career with totals of 26,710 points, 7,804 rebounds, and 9,887 assists in career averages of 25.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists a game in 1040 games played. Robertson has led the Royals to a title in 1971 and was named MVP in 1972. He was a 12-time All-Star and a 3-time All-Star Game MVP, 9-time All-NBA first team, 1961 Rookie of the Year winner, and is also named as one fo the 50 Greatest Players in the NBA in 1996.
3.) Jerry West. West played his entire 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1960-74 and is considered not only as one of the best point guards in NBA history
