Although most people are naturally concerned about the possibility of becoming infected with Swine Flu, it's important to realise that it is not really that different from any other flu virus. The symptoms are more or less the same, therefore so is the treatment. It's also important to realise that most otherwise healthy people will completely recover from having flu with no long term ill effects.
Antiviral drugs will not cure flu but they will make the symptoms milder and should help to make patients feel better faster. Swine Flu apparently responds well to two antivirals, Tamiflu and Relenza. Both drugs have restrictions on who can take them and what the dosage should be according to age and other health/medical conditions. They are both prescription drugs and should be taken only in accordance with instructions from a physician. Antiviral drugs are most effective if they are taken within the first couple of days once symptoms have developed, which is why it's important to seek medical attention as early as possible if you suspect you have flu.
Most people that get Swine Flu will not be hospitalised so it's important to know how to deal with the symptoms of flu effectively at home. Staying indoors is sensible, not just because it's unlikely that someone would feel well enough to go out anyway, but also to avoid spreading the virus to other people. Rest as much as possible and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and to help reduce fever. There are proprietary medicines that can be bought over the counter in a pharmacy which will help to relieve the symptoms of flu but note that aspirin should not be given to children or teenagers with flu symptoms.
For those who prefer not to take conventional medicines there are a number of homeopathic remedies suggested for the treatment of flu symptoms. Elderberry has long been used as a treatment for cold and flu symptoms and clinical research has shown some positive results as to its effectiveness. Elderberry is available from most health food stores as juice, capsules or syrup, although the syrup is probably best used to treat flu symptoms. Homeopaths recommend taking 15ml of Elderberry syrup four times per day until symptoms subside. Only use commercial preparations as Elderberry leaves, flowers and roots contain cyanide and it's therefore unsafe to try to make your own preparation unless you are absolutely certain of what you're doing.
Echinacea is also a popular herb for the treatment
