Olive oil has many uses. The uses of olive oil range from cooking to polishing shoes. It is a versatile oil that has been used for centuries. Early references to the use of olive oil can be found in the Bible, the Koran, and many other ancient texts. Our ancestors understood the value of this oil. Many people around the world today still use this magnificent oil. Let's take a look at some of the benefits of this "miracle oil". Okay, maybe it's not a "miracle oil", but it does have a lot of properties that make it beneficial and advantageous for us to use.
We have learned of the dangers of trans fats and saturated oils and how they can lead to a variety of health issues. These fats can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, and many other medical conditions. But all fats are not bad for you. Olive oil contains what we refer to as "good" fats. The monounsaturated fat contained in olive oil helps transport the "bad" fats out of the body. By transporting the bad fat out, your body's cholesterol level is lowered. The lowering of your cholesterol reduces the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.
Another advantage of using olive oil is its antioxidant properties. Vitamins A and E are powerful antioxidants found in olive oil that help neutralize cancer causing free radical molecules that left unchecked can cause major problems. The antioxidants in olive oil protect red blood cells from damage caused by free radicals.
Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant found in olive oil also. These antioxidants help slow the ageing process. Some people use olive oil topically to treat certain skin damage. It is also used to soften nail cuticles as well as a bath oil.
Some people use olive oil to get rid of lice. As part of a non-pesticide home treatment, the lice are smothered and suffocated by the oil, leaving them dead. This method has been used over the years and seems to be effective in the termination of head lice. But still feel free to use an over the counter pesticide found in your local drug store should the need arise.
We have discussed the nutritional, dermatological, and even pest control benefits of olive oil, but the best part of all is what I use it for the most, the taste. You can use olive oil in all types of recipes. You can also spread it on bread or pour it over a salad. Olive oil is a main part of meal preparation in many countries around the world. The popularity of olive oil in this country continues to grow especially as we learn more about the many health benefits it provides.
