Dead Echo, Chapter 14: The Last Precaution.
Corporal Donahue was still reflecting on the events of the past few hours, it was all blur, but at the same time it was like a nightmare that replayed itself in slow motion, the entire situation was impossible to grasp.
"We're approaching the Divinus Eternus corporate building, ETA: five minutes." Corporal Stanton called from the front of the humvee, while she too was trying to collect herself.
"Alright," Corporal Rosewell said, standing up, "Here's the plan."
"Hold on," An all too familiar voice cackled over the comm, " I don't remember going over any plan."
"Calm down, Rob," Rosewell said coolly, "that's because we didn't go over it."
"Wait," Private First Class Greene interjected, "don't we need Rob for the plan?"
"Yes damnit! Would you please let me go over the damn plan now!"
"Sorry."
"Okay, me and Greene are going to get off at the Divinus HQ, Donahue, Stanton, you two are going to go pick up Rob and the disk, by the way, how is that coming along Rob?"
"Uh," His voice began over the comm unit, "it should be about ready by the time you get here."
"Good to hear, and-"
"Excuse me, Rosewell, but you seems to have forgotten me." The voice belonged to Staff Sergeant Donald Keyes, who at the moment was sitting in the seat closest to the Stanton's in what was slowly becoming a puddle of his own blood.
"Sarge, come on, you're in pretty bad shape there."
"I am not useless damnit! I am still the ranking Operative here!"
"Sir, you are damn near incapacitated! We don't need you going out there and getting shot... again!"
Keyes looked like he was going to say something, but before he could he was over come with a coughing fit, regurgitating his own blood in the process.
"Guys," Stanton called from the driver's seat, "we've arrived at the Divinus building, and we sure have some company waiting for us!"
The last part was evident as bullets ricocheted off the outside of the humvee, they did little damage however the vehicle was built for this kind of thing.
"Ah, shit!" Rosewell called, "We're sitting ducks if they decide to bring out the big guns."
He paused and looked around, "Alright, Donahue, stabilize Keyes, Greene, let's go."
The two hopped out the back of the humvee as it opened, the noise of the gun fight got louder, now with Greene and Rosewell returning fire, the humvee sped off.
"Remember," Rosewell began over the comm, "come back here as soon as you get Rob, we won't last forever."
"Wilco."
