Is India becoming the new hub of education?

India a country of more than a billion people, is showing the signs of tremendous growth since last 15 years. No doubt it has maximum number of illiterate people in the world, but it is also important to note that it has more number of qualified professionals than any other country. You call it irony or scope of development that is upto you.

India has shown its potential in the fields of software, Business Processes, Manufacturing, Automobile and many other fields. It will not surprise me if education becomes the next boom in India. The reasons to believe so are plenty, some of which are here.

India has more than 1300 Engineering schools whose annual intake comes up close to 439,000 students per annum as of 2004 figures of AICTE- a autonomous body regulating technical institutions in India. A little less than 450 Pharmacy Institutes producing more than 24000 pharmacists a year. and some 20000 doctors are graduated every year from various institutions.

Not only the numbers but the cost of education is another eye catching fact. Average cost of education in an engineering institution anywhere in India is less than 5000 US Dollars per year. That too if you live a lavish life out there.

Some people might think that India is a third world country and why should I send my child to a third world country for studies. Now things have changed drastically on that front. After liberalization, consumerism has mad its roots strong in India, too. You can have major US brands of retailing, clothing, accessories, and almost anything you want out there in a medium town of India. Probably over next decade with the help of rural marketing and communication these things will reach the rural India. With present communication revolution it is not really difficult to communicate to and from any part of India.

And the important aspect from student's point of view the quality of education. India is home of Nalanda and Takshashila universities of ancient era. And at present it is home of IITs as well as IIMs which are beyond introductions. Also the Regional Engineering colleges and other private institutes are considerably competitive at world level.

Nowadays some of the corporate houses are also coming into education field with a vision to provide world level educational institutions at affordable price.
So all in all it would not be a wonder if within next decade if India becomes a global education hub for all the knowledge seekers all across the world.
