Board game reviews: Monopoly

Monopoly is a lot of fun and it allows us to become a tycoon, something which we're probably not already in real life. It gives us a chance to live out our dreams of having a lot of money and owning real estate, while putting our friends (or people we dislike but suffer) out of business without actually causing them harm. It allows us to gloat at the misfortune of others while having a good laugh about it. That is, while being a fun game for the entire family, what Monopoly is about. But it does also teach restraint where money is concerned and helps to teach players the value of making wise choices throughout their life. If one wrong move has been made, it could cost them their money and therefore their livelihood, while changing their life. That is, if the wrong decision was made in the real world, though that does also apply to Monopoly. If a wrong move is made, it could very well haunt the player for the game's duration.

So, let's start with the basics of how Monopoly is played. A maximum of eight players can play it. Each player selects a piece to move around the board, which range from a car to an old boot. Each player starts at a place on the board labelled Go and normally, a player will collect two hundred in cash each time they pass it. To move, players take turns and roll two dice that determines where they go. Also, someone will need to be the banker. This can be someone who has a piece on the board or someone who just watches and deals with anything that concerns money.

Now, when someone moves and they land on a plot of land that can be bought (nearly all the spaces on the board that isn't owned), they can decide whether or not to purchase it. The board is actually arranged so that the least valuable properties start at one end and the most valuable ones are at the other end. The properties are also colour coded. If a player owns all the properties belonging to one colour, then they can begin to build houses. Once four houses have been built on a property, a player can purchase a hotel. What happens is if a player lands on a property owned by a another, they have to pay rent. The basic amount without houses or hotels isn't much. However, the rent goes up with each house placed on the property and while a player can only have one hotel on each property, a player will earn more from it than they would with four houses. So, that's the basics. The idea is to buy up the properties on the board and to bankrupt your opponents.

The strategy aspects and the
