It sounds gruesome, and it was. But the following true event, witnessed by the world, was the defining catalyst in increasing safety in the sport of Fencing. Before giving an overview on the individual items it is important to understanding the need for protective clothing:

Mid July and Rome is sweltering outside. The crowds pack the air-conditioned stadium. What a fantastic duel - the reigning World Champion Vladimir Victorovich Smirnov defending his title at the 1982 World Cup, against a formidable competitor.

Smirnov attacks. Matthias Behr of West Germany launches his counterattack. The flexible foil bending against Smirnov's chest. Then without the knowledge of either, it snaps. With no resistance to stop him, Smirnov continues into the lunge. The now rigid sword moves up, catching the champion's mask. As Behr moves in the mask - no match for a broken, jagged blade - gives way like butter.

The blade continues through Smirnov's mask and with nothing to halt its forward progression it enters his eye socket. Still farther it pushes. It penetrates his brain. Smirnov never woke from the resulting coma and was pronounced dead at the end of the competition.

Masks are now twice the strength as those of the 80's and the blades themselves are made of a much safer composite. Today, such accidents are almost unheard of, and thankfully so. It is due to the strict standards with regards to the protective clothing.

When researching a mask, consider one with a removable, washable lining; the ability to rinse out your sweat will be a welcome one. Many people believe the 1600N a better buy in the long run, as a
