Major league players hitting two grand slams in one game

3 win against the Cleveland Indians. With base clearing shots in the 5th and 6th innings he became the third player in a decade to reach the goal. He is also the only Detroit Tiger to ever do it.

In 1970, home run champion and Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson joined the '2 grand slams in one game club' by belting one in the 5th inning and another in the 6th while playing for the Baltimore Orioles. They defeated the Washington Senators that day 12 to 2.

It would be another 25 years before anyone would do it again. Late in the season of 1995, Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura smacked grand slams in the 4th and 5th innings in a 14 to 3 rout of the Texas Rangers embarrassing them in front of their home crowd. By the way, Ventura also has the claim to fame of being the only player to ever hit grand slam home runs in each of both games during a double header.

In 1998, the only catcher to accomplish the feat was Baltimore Oriole Chris Hoiles who smashed grand slams in the 3rd and 8th innings during an away game against the Cleveland Indians. The Orioles won the game 15 to 3 with Hoiles responsible for more than half of his team's runs.

In April of 1999, St. Louis Cardinals' third baseman Fernando Tatis became only the second National League player to hit 2 grand slams in one game. He also became the only player to ever do it twice in the same inning by hitting a grand slam with no outs and another with 2 outs during the third inning. Both grand slams were hit off of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chan Ho Park, embarrassingly in front of the home crowd.

In May of 1999, Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra gave his mom a day late Mother's Day present by hitting 2 grand slams at Fenway Park against the Seattle Mariners. With bases loaded home runs in the 1st and 8th innings, 'Nomah' as Boston fans called him, became the second player to hit 2 grand slams in one game that year. It's the only time it has happened twice in the same season.

The last person to ever hit 2 grand slams in one game was also a Boston Red Sox player. In 2003, third baseman Bill Mueller cleared the bases with home runs in the 7th and 8th innings against the Texas Rangers. The Red Sox were losing the game 4 to 2 when Mueller decided to take matters into his own hands. He also hit a solo home run in the third inning which puts him in the '3 home runs in one game club' as well. He is also the only switch hitter to ever hit 2 grand slams in one game one each from opposite sides of the plate.

There's nothing more exciting than going to a ball game and seeing a grand slam home run, except seeing two of them. So far it has only happened twelve times. Some other interesting facts are that it has been accomplished by third basemen more times than any other position. The American League has done it 10 times to the National League's 2 times. Boston Red Sox players have done it more often than any other team. And only the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers have been on the wrong end of this feat more than once. The only question left to ask is, who will be the next?

UPDATE: On Monday July 27, 2009 Josh Willingham of the Washington Nationals became the 13th Major League Baseball player to hit 2 grand slams in one game. In a 14 to 6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, Willingham hit home runs with the bases loaded in both the 5th and 6th innings in the game. He also tied a franchise record with 8 runs batted in (RBI's) in a game.
