How to make the perfect Mother's Day brunch

Making a perfect brunch for mom's special day doesn't require a staff of trained decorators and cooks. The key thing to remember when planning for Mother's Day, or any celebration for that matter, is to aim for a pleasant, enjoyable, and relaxed day. Striving for a memorable, pull-out-the-stops event should be much further down on your list of goals. You are likely to end up frustrated, exhausted, and not necessarily happy with the result. Rule number one of entertaining is tired and stressed hosts do not make for a pleasant event.

Instead, consider what you can achieve with the time, space and budget available to you. Serve a sit-down meal if you like, but keep in mind that this option is best for people who have plenty of dining space, time to cook and are at ease in the kitchen. Even then, it's best to use recipes that are familiar and don't require a lot of last minute fussing. Enlisting someone to help serve is a must!

Do you have a small apartment or home? You would be wise not to attempt a sit-down brunch for twenty. You may want to think about a buffet for as many as your space can comfortably hold. On the other hand,if the weather is cooperative, an outdoor picnic can be delightful. If funds are a little tight, or if you aren't a confident cook, make it a potluck meal. (Mom is the exception, of course. This should be one day where she doesn't have to plan or make a meal.)

If dining space or time to cook are problems, but money is not, invite mom and the guests out for a lovely meal. Plenty of options exist, and minimal effort is involved. The most important thing to remember is to make a reservation the sooner, the better! This is one day when you can be certain the best restaurants will be turning people away.

Finally, think about what the guest of honor enjoys. Spending just a few moments considering the mom you're honoring can go a long way towards making an occasion that feels special for her. Little gifts or extra touches her favorite muffins, flowers that she especially likes, a special framed photo will demonstrate your attentiveness. Big-ticket gifts rarely carry the impact that loving, thoughtful remembrances do. The mom you are celebrating will feel loved and special as you honor her in this way.
