For Mom
I do not remember the day that I was born
But I do remember the day that I died
You found me lying on the ground
You picked me up limp and broken
And you carried me home to a place of safety
You held me close to your heart
Letting your heart beat for mine
Breathing your life into my body until the faintest pulse was palpable
You gave up your clothes, your food, your very life breath
To sustain me for another day
I took and took for it was all I knew how to do
But you were never bitter, never resentful with me
When you had nothing left to give
You sat and gently rocked me back and forth
Until I could stand on my own
I hesitated walking away from you for there was not much left of you
I had taken it all
But you gently prodded me forward
Forward to live my destiny, whatever that may be
And I left you behind not knowing what would become of you
So many years later I realized all that I had taken
And the guilt riddled me to the core
As I knew you gave your life for me
I came home to you, looked into your eyes, no words, just a tear
And you told me
"You are my greatest blessing in this life"
And I knew love in its purest form
