TV show reviews: American Idol

Even the naysayers have to agree that there is no end in sight for American Idol. Certain aspects of the show many change, but it is essentially the same show, with the same premise, that it has always been.

It may be off-putting to hear about what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling, specifically with regard to the tremendous egos and the inflated salaries. But these elements don't define the show. Finding that next great talent is the ultimate goal.

The key to enjoying American Idol is to leave any sense of cynicism at the door. Follow the journey of a few contestants who sing for the love of the music. You can tell by the light in their eyes and the passion in their voices. You can tell by the audience's reaction following a heartfelt performance.

Don't get involved in the early audition process, where untalented people, looking for their fifteen minutes of fame, are manipulated for ratings. Start watching once the production moves to Hollywood. Find a few contestants with interesting backgrounds, raw talent, and hopeful smiles. Take an interest in their journeys.

Put yourself in the contestants' shoes. Imagine having the fearlessness to get up on a national stage and be utterly vulnerable to the whims of a surly judge. Imagine wanting something so badly that you are willing to risk humiliation in order to achieve your goals. Every year, for one contestant, the dream becomes a reality, proving that the rags to riches story is still alive and well.

The process is far from perfect. Certain segments of society forget that it's supposed to be about the talent. Long before someone is old enough to judge talent, with access to technology, a vote can be cast. There's no limit to how many times a misguided person can vote in a two-hour period. The judges, often with their own agendas, influence the voting in interesting ways. But even when the cream doesn't rise to the top, these kids know that the exposure they are getting is just as important as the outcome.

Music is, to me, the soundtrack to optimism, says Grammy winning musician Bob Harper. In a world where it often takes courage to be optimistic, music can be the guiding force that brings people together. And where there's a feeling of community, hope is given a chance to take root.

Music is about optimism, celebration, community, hope. American Idol is about hope.
