For some women, the symptoms of peri-menopause or more simply, menopause are relatively easy to manage. For others, however, menopause brings with it a myriad of arresting changes to both your body and your emotional status, leaving many women with an overwhelming feeling of isolation if there is insufficient support.
While menopause itself does not require a cure as it is a natural process, some of the more disturbing symptoms, specifically depression, should not be ignored.
Women who are fighting depression during menopause might find hormone replacement therapy (HRT) helpful, while others may not.
This article speaks to women who, like me, have been unsuccessfully treated with HRT. If you're feeling hopeless in your search for relief from the unrelenting sadness that may accompany the transition from your child bearing years, know that you are not alone.
Sometimes sleeplessness is attributed as the cause of depression; night sweats, inner tremors and muscle tension or soreness are examples of what might cause a menopausal woman to lose rest.
Alternatively, the depression itself may be activating the sleeplessness; incessant worrying, anxiety attacks and the discomforts due to loss of, or, increased appetite and therefore, changes in eating habits, are all signs of depression and deeply affect the quality of our sleep. If you suspect the latter is responsible, there are options to help you cope, if not overcome the depression.
There is speculation regarding the use of anti-depressants by menopausal women and postpartum mothers alike. While some believe the use of anti-depressants is essential in maintaining the quality of life in women with hormonal imbalances, others dismiss their use as a crutch. There is no shame in trying a prescribed medication designed to balance your perspective on life. Ultimately, the choice is yours and yours alone.
On-line support groups are another alternative that offer talk therapy relief. There are many excellent groups that are sympathetic to your circumstances and offer encouragement when you are feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. In joining discussions, you might find comfort from other women who are experiencing the same or similar symptoms. I found them extremely beneficial, especially during my sleepless nights. If you do not want to participate directly, you have the option of simply reading through the topics and discussions. They contain a variety of perspectives and coping methods from others sharing your experience. Likely, you will feel less isolated as a result.
With all of the changes that accompany menopause, it's understandable to find yourself becoming increasingly depressed with life in general. If you are struggling to resist penetrating sadness and grief, it may be time to address your symptoms with your gynecologist or general practitioner to rule in, or out, menopause as a factor. Try not to dismiss your feelings as a phase; putting on a brave face is exhausting, especially if the depression is persistent and diminishing your overall happiness and productivity. Menopause doesn't have to be as difficult if you remain diligent in finding solutions that are right for you.
