Guide to buying unisex baby clothes for a shower gift

You have to feel for the mom as she's opened her tenth gift and out comes yet another yellow or white, if you're lucky, duck outfit. Some of the outfits may be cute, but let's get creative here. The mom to be deserves a gift worth keeping! Some stores out there do help a sister out with a section of unisex clothes at the Gap or Gymboree. Take advantage of the no brainer predicament and head straight there. But, if you want to have some fun, try a themed gift.

Here are some ideas for a themed gift. Believe me, the mom to be will thank you!

1. Bath Time

You would include a baby bath, a hooded bath towel, a rubber ducky, bath lotion and soap.

2. Meal Time

You could go all out and just opt for the high chair or you could buy all the Sippy cups, plates, and spoons. So far, IKEA has the best older child plastic silverware, plates and cups. Make sure to find super cute bibs with funny saying on them. Or buy blank ones and color them to say what you want.

3. Bed Time

Think of items for the crib. Buy the bedding that the mother registered for. In fact, always consult the registry first. It was created for a reason. Those are really the items they want. Make a baby blanket. Don't be afraid to add colors. But stay away from making it mostly a blue or pink. Any neutral colors will due. Black is the new pink for girls anyway! If you are at a loss buy a sleeper and then copy it for the colors for the matching blanket. Not that crafting, ask a friend and pay her to make the blanket or shop for both in your favorite baby store. Other bed time items could include night lights, books, swaddlers, or stuff animals.

4. Play Time

Include Toys, Toys, and more Toys! There are endless playmats, swings, and bumbo seats available.

5. Reflection Time

Pick out a beautiful frame or a baby journal for Mom and Dad to capture those special moments in time. Here's an opportunity for you if you have a hobby or profession to offer that as a gift. If you make announcements, offer to make theirs for free. If you are a decent photographer make that your gift to them. If you are a hair stylist give the gift of the haircuts to come. The possibilities are big here.

For those of you that still want to contribute with clothes look at Robeez shoes. You can find them at Nordstrom's or www.Zappos.com. Onsies that you design are another option. Or better yet, go with a gift certificate and a fancy heart felt card. That goes a long way. It can be very personal and appreciated.
