How to manage post-holiday debt

The best way to prepare for the holiday shopping season is to save some of your income each month for the time when you will be buying gifts for your family and friends. For that purpose many or most banks offer what are known as some type of "Christmas Club Account." Then again, you can always put a few dollars of change into your piggy bank or a jar, or wherever you put your pocket change.

The idea here is to find ways not to go into debt each year because you want to show your family and friends just how much you care about them. So too, you do not have to spend a whole lot of your hard earned money as a means to convey your affection and/or respect. Keep in mind that some of those people will give something to you.

As a matter of fact, you might even, dollar wise, get more than you give. In any event, this is also an opportunity for you to recover some of the money that you spend. You can resell some or all of what you receive.

However, in spite of your best efforts you could very well use one or more of your credit cards to charge each of your gift purchases. By doing so this will allow you to earn another month's worth of income in which to pay those credit card amounts due. My advice to you is to keep a running total of the amounts that you do charge. Like it or not, it is too easy to exceed the amount that you planned to spend on each gift.

The wise shopper makes a list that contains the names of the people who you will give gifts to. While you are in the process of doing so it is also wise to list the gift as well. When that task is accomplished you can easily estimate the total cost of those gifts by just going to those places where you intent to shop and write down the price of each item. You will get a very good estimate of your holiday gift expense, maybe a month or two before the holiday season.

Believe it or not, some or most of those items might go on sale and by knowing what the regular price was when you created your shopping list you will be able to determine if you will be able to spend more for some of the other gifts that you planned to purchase.

In other words, you are creating a budget with a limit of how much you can afford to spend for those gifts. You must adhere to that upper limit. Otherwise, you might incur a shopping debt that you most certainly will not be able to repay within a reasonable time.
