A Birthday Tribute.

Tail One.

The first tail, the curly one, is mine of course, and it all started in a bit of a blur. My mummy was a very, very busy person and found motherhood a bit of a trial I think. Maybe it had something to do with only managing two babies when all her friends had at least nine. Anyway, I remember food time as being a bit of a nuisance all round. Just as I was getting into the swing she'd be off being busy and my brother and I would have to chance our luck the next time she decided to be still for a moment. It was good I suppose though, I do have a fabulous waist line! I was smart and played 'pathetic and wistful', you know, head drooping over side of basket with eyes half closed and trembling just enough for the basket to shake. Mum would see the untidiness of it all and rush back and feed me just enough to stop the basket getting ruffled and then rush off again. So, life wasn't a dawdle to begin with but I survived.

The day arrived when we had to be humanized and we were all got up in our best bib and tucker for The Parade of The Puppies. We dogs just kind of know about this.. no big surprise at all and learn things like, 'droopy ears', 'big eyes', 'half closed eyes', 'nose spread and glisten', 'elongated neck with nose resting on edge of basket whilst rolling up eyes sideways', 'never yap', 'lick potential human only when picked up', 'pretend (in my case) to be a quiet, well behaved dog'; you know, butter wouldn't melt! Anyway, in they came and off we went on our routines.

I'm afraid to say, even to myself, in case of what it means, that my brother was picked instantly, well he does look just like our Dad and despite my extremely clever pathetic and adorable performance, I was left to help my mother whizz around a lot.

Then, on a very fateful day, the bone on the wall rang and I heard the word Vet mentioned. That was our first learned word and I thought pricky thoughts and then watched The Human look down at me. What could this mean? Anyway, I decided to get busy and not think at all. As I was running round the kennel to see how fast, suddenly there were two humans standing watching me, in awe I thought and ran a bit faster. All thoughts of the usual routines went out of my head as I tore round and round; I knew they were very impressed as had been the Vet the first time he came to prick me. I am positive it was him and fate that brought those people to see me. Sure enough they chose me and I had my first
