How to get rid of adware

As a home computer technician the most common problem that I see is adware infestations. Customers typically call to say something like this: "I just got this new computer a month ago and its already running slower then my old one. Whats going on? Should I return it?" I stop them immediately.

Folks, if you've noticed your computer is taking a long time doing simple tasks, or it sounds like it's busy even when it shouldn't be, that means you have adware problem. The good news is that it's a simple problem to solve. So simple in fact that you can do it in 2 steps.

The first step is prevention. This step is all about stopping the adware from getting onto your computer in the first place.
While there are many ways you can do this, I've found the simplest solution involves 1 easy change: Simply switch your web browser from Internet Explorer (IE) to Firefox. This works for 2 reasons. The first is that more work has been put into making Firefox a more secure browser. The second is that adware is more often programmed to work with IE because of its popularity. As far as prevention is concerned I would also make one other small suggestion: That you stay away from shifty looking websites. Anything that has alot of pop ups, adverts, and is tricky to navigate. These sites are swarming with adware just waiting to infect your computer.

Note: When you switch browsers don't worry about your bookmarks and settings, Firefox will ask if you want them imported during its install.

The second step is Maintenance. Scary word isn't it? Yet another job to add to your daily routine. Don't worry, its easier then brushing you're teeth and you'll only have to do it once a month. It all begins with downloading Spybot Search And Destroy. This handy program will immunize your PC against future adware infestations. It will also cleanse your system of any that have taken up residence.

You'll also need 1 more piece of software in your arsenal to put a stop to adware forever and that's Lavasoft's Adaware. This robust program will clean up any adware that may have slipped by Spybots detections services. These two programs in tandem will absolutely remove all adware from you system. Be sure to update both before running them.

That's it folks. I've been using these 3 pieces of software for close to 10 years now and I haven't had adware trouble since. Your system can be running at full capacity in a matter of minutes by making these simple changes. Not only will you have a smoother running PC, you'll also save the money that you would have spent on a technician.
