Video game reviews: Star Wars: Obi-Wan (Xbox)

by Don Emery

With the release of Star Wars: Episode I and George Lucas' prequels for the Star Wars movies comes a wave of merchandising opportunities one of them being video games. There are many good examples of this like Star Wars Episode I: Racer, Star Wars: Starfighter and plenty of others but this is not one of them but more on that later. The story of Obi-Wan takes place before the events of Episode I. You first start out in the undercity of Coruscant fighting the Black Heth Thugs this leads Obi-Wan ti their arms dealers the Jin'Ha which have weapons that are resistant to Obi-Wan's force powers and lightsaber. That eventually leads you to the events on Naboo and Episode I ending with a fight against Darth Maul who killed Obi-Wan's master Qui-Gon Jinn minutes earlier.

Pros:

Lightsaber!

The most interesting feature for this game is the lightsaber control. Obi-Wan's lightsaber is controlled by the right thumbstick which makes the lightsaber incredibly fun and easy to use. You can even throw the lightsaber by clicking the right thumbstick in conjunction with the force button and the cool thing is that you can control where the lightsaber flies with ease.

Versus Battles.

It's your standard duel mode in which you pick two characters and fight to the death it could be fun with two players as it is not that fun against the computer. The only downside is that you have to go through the extra missions to unlock the bulk of the characters for this mode which is annoying.

Cons:

Presentation.

I know this game was released in 2001 which was early in the Xbox's console cycle so the graphics would not be the greatest but Star Wars: Obi-Wan looks like a game for the Sega Dreamcast instead of the Xbox. The voice acting is possibly the worst voice acting I have ever heard and they do not even use the real actors from the Episode I movie!

Empty Levels.

As the heading suggests the levels feel a bit empty as there is a lot of wasted space in the levels and it feels as if the levels should have been smaller. As a plus sign of sorts the missions and the game as a whole is rather short because of this.

Unsatisfying Battles.

The in game fights seem to be rather boring which is a big problem seeing how the game revolves around these battles and how can a crowbar stand up to a lightsaber? I do not know but it happens in this game and a few levels feature re-spawning enemies which is annoying but it does not happen to often.

I rate this game a 4 out of 10, avoid this game. Only pick it up if it is dirt cheap like ten dollars or less or if you are a hardcore Star Wars fan.
