The daily grind: How commuting is bad for the soul

There may be people who genuinely enjoy their long drive to work every day, but if those people exist they don't share their thoughts very often. Most people are less than thrilled to get behind the wheel of a car every day. If people had their choice, they would gladly take a shorter drive. But, unless people want to find new jobs, they have to deal with their commute. Here are a few thoughts on how commuting can be bad for the emotional health and ultimately the "soul" of the driver.



Time lost

For one thing, commuting takes away people's time. In most cases, would rather be doing anything else besides spending time on the road. This makes people frustrated, and it can start to wear on them if they are unable to do particular things that they enjoy or feel an obligation to accomplish. The commute can also be physically tiring, despite the fact that people are just sitting.

Money and stress

Driving also costs money. The amount of money that people spend on gas, maintenance, and fast food (because they didn't have time to eat) can add up over time. When people look at the transportation line item in their personal budget, it can cause them to feel stressed and make them wish that they could expend their money in other places. Stress from money concerns can wear on the "soul", particularly if people feel trapped in their current job.

Road rage

Commuting can also take a toll when people are forced to deal with other drivers. Sometimes people make mistakes on the road that are misinterpreted by other drivers. Other times people drive carelessly or drive in such a way that others are put in danger. This can cause additional stress for everyone on the road and it can lead to "road rage" and other sorts of confrontations. This can also contribute to the stress of the commuter, as they must navigate through the madness.

Coping strategies

Overall, people have to figure out ways to deal with the stress of commuting. Some people meditate in order to create some sense of calm. Others listen to their favorite radio program or digital music device. Some individuals take advantage of books on CD, which can be a great way to pass the time. In general, there may not be a single way to deal with a long arduous commute. However, if people are going to maintain their personal balance, they must recognize the situation for what it is and make adjustments over time. Only then can they avoid damaging their "soul."
