Spirituality is usually associated with a higher power. To bring spirituality into everyday life is to seek harmony between the mind and the body, and to explore the traits that draw us closer to God. Or to find a way to make sense of the world, and manage the stress and disappointments that sometimes seem too frequent. We want to experience peace, and a balance for the good and evil that exists within us.
Developing spirituality in everyday life does require discipline. It is a purposeful act that will allow you to focus your mind on the good and positive aspects of your life. In order to develop this discipline, set aside some time each day to reflect on what is good about your life, and what you are thankful for. Choose a quiet place, free of distractions. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes, and begin to find the things you are grateful for.
Read a chapter of Proverbs each day. Proverbs is a book in the Bible. There are thirty-one chapters, one for each day of the month. Proverbs is a book of wisdom, and the teachings will assist in finding peace and harmony. As you read, concentrate on what is being taught. Does this chapter relate to events in your life? Or does the chapter outline characteristics of righteousness? In this quiet time, ask God what He would have you learn from the chapter. Meditate on what is being read, and ask yourself if you can carry this into your daily life. Proverbs 22:29 reads Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. This is a good incentive when you are feeling bored or under appreciated at work.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. (Philippians 4:8) As you go through your day, continue to fill your mind with positive thoughts. Look for the good traits in your co-workers, your friends and your family. Search for the good things, however small, and remember these often.
Daily devotionals are very helpful. RBC ministries offers a booklet titled Our Daily Bread. There is a scripture and a page for each day. The book is uplifting, and will equip you to face each day with a positive thought. You can read the daily devotional online at http://www.rbc.org/odb/odb.shtml, or order the booklet at the same link. There are many other sites; http://www.bible.com/daily-devotional.php, http://www.cfdevotionals.org/, and http://christianwomentoday.com/devotions/ are just a few. Many of the sites offer daily emails of the devotions.
As you introduce spirituality into your daily life, understand that this is a deliberate choice. When things get stressful, take a short walk. Meditate on what you have read during your devotional time. Make a purposeful effort to think about things you are thankful for. Look for the good in the situations. As you practice this, you will find that spirituality will become intertwined with your daily life.
