How to write thoughtful birthday cards to your kids

Create your own "Hallmark Moments", be the author of your own child's memories and keepsakes. You don't have to be gifted with the talent of Emily Dickinson or the imagination of J.K. Rowling to create something written that your child will treasure. Not only will you be saving money, in a downward economy, by creating your own masterpieces; but you will truly be giving your child a "piece of your mind"; and perhaps the most precious piece.

If you happen to be gifted with artistic ability, then go right ahead, Van Gogh, and paint, color, pencil or watercolor your emotions away! If you were born with the gift of gab, then let your thoughts flow. Your child will laugh with a memory or joke that only you two experienced, or a silly little poem that embraces their heart. If you are a photography buff, then take out those dusty pictures and your vibrant selections of construction paper and create an album, a scrapbook, a memory; something your child will proudly display throughout the birthday years.

Only look to the example of the paper napkin; my daughter is a senior in high school and treasures the little scribbles and hearts that I write to her, in under a minute. She actually thanks me whenever she discovers one is her crumpled brown lunch bag. The scribble is simple, the time spent is minimum, but the love is heart felt and the emotions are genuine.

If you are still searching for a creative idea, and have a close relationship with your keyboard, or an emotional attachment to your computer; feel free to spark it up and surf the web. But surf cautiously, because this is your creation, not something contrived . Feel free to create a card using the Internet example as your template of sorts. However, make the emotions inside your own, write your own feelings, glue on your own pictures, stamp your own impressions.

There is nothing that your child will find on the Internet, that will be more special than something that is created by "www.YOU" ! You can keep it simple, as gifts from the heart aren't complex, rather straightforward and to the point. You can write about the day your child was born, how you felt at that moment or something they achieved that made you so proud. It could be as simple as a passing grade on a test they diligently studied for, or just the way they consider your emotions and respect you. Whatever it is, find the "thing" that first made you fall in love with your child, and the "things" that keep you hooked on this gorgeous, silly and awkward little thing, called your child.

Love is simple, and easily expressed. The bought "things" of this earth eventually fade, but your emotions, expressed to your child, will be a keepsake forever. Jewels can tarnish; love is golden.
