A wise man once said, "How much you pay is exactly how much somethings worth is".
I couldn't agree more. If the professional athletes are getting paid like they are, it is solely because the owners, G.M.'s and fans are willing to shell it out. I will pay around $60 for one ticket to a football game here in Green Bay. That is to watch a team of the Packers caliber play any other team in the league, regardless of who it is. Should the Packers get back to the Super Bowl in my life (doubtful, considering the current state of affairs), I might have to exceed the limit on my home equity value in order to see the game. I understand that the league is getting it's fair share, as are the respective teams' management and organization structures, however. The players are making a healthy living, as they should.
But I ask, would I pay $60 dollars to go see an Arena game? Or even the Arena Bowl? I doubt it. Therefor, the players in the NFL are worth their exorbitant salaries because their level of play demands it. When you consider the fact that they are playing without guaranteed contracts and can be let go at anytime, I assure you, they deserve to make as much money as any other profession. We are, for lack of a better term, Free Agents in whatever field or profession we work in. I can look for any other job I want to at any given time. It's just that I don't think what I do will garner any multi-million dollar deals from any companies. Also, I doubt the brand of steel-toed boots I wear really wants a guy who looks like me to be their spokesperson.
In closing, here are a few questions to ask when you want to complain about the "over-priced" professional athletes.
1. Would you pay the same price to go see a high school football game as you would a professional game?
2. Have you ever complained about the wages the broadcast teams make for calling these games?
3. Would you like to have a job where, at any moment, no matter how well you think you may be performing, you could be let go?
4. Would you like to go through training camp two-a-days?
5. Would you like to have Ray Lewis attempting to decapitate you just for wearing a different uniform?
6. Would you like to have your name dragged through the mud because you gave up one measley sack, that just happened to be the only play that you blew your assignment on?
I guess, given the chance, I would because I, like the gentlemen that strap it on every Sunday, love the game and all that it represents in American culture.
