Homeschooling can be a rewarding experience for both parents and children. However, it is not all sunshine and fun. There are many struggles faced by the homeschooling family. These issues affect everyone involved in the education process. Dealing with problems is a part of home education. Knowing the things that may come up help prepare people to deal with them when they arise.
One of the biggest struggles for the homeschooling family is dealing with the reactions of others who do not educate at home. Almost everyone has an opinion when it comes to teaching, and this area is no different. Be prepared to face the questions and possible scorn with facts. Stand by the reasons you have chosen to homeschool, be it for religious or other beliefs. Websites like www.hslda.org are a wonderful resource for facts and other information regarding homeschooling.
Children who have been taught outside the home may require a period of adjustment to learning at home. They often view homeschooling as a vacation as opposed to "real school". This attitude will call for a strict stand by the parents to get things on track. You must make it clear from the beginning that learning will be taking place, and slacking on duties will not be tolerated. Make a plan and stick to it.
Dealing with distractions during the school day can be a struggle for the family who is homeschooling. Electronics, friends and family can create interruptions that must be dealt with. Turn off cell phones, game systems and televisions. Explain politely to family and friends that you cannot visit or chat during class time. For this time each day your house is a school, and it should be treated as such.
Choosing curriculum and what to teach can be quite a struggle to the beginning homeschooler. There are religious and secular (non-religious) options when it comes to books. You can choose to buy packages that contain everything needed for the year, or you may purchase curriculum pieces individually to customize your school year. Materials can be bought online or at teaching supply stores. Even many department stores and discount outlets carry educational supplies. Every state has guidelines for what is to be covered each year. These guidelines can be found online or may be obtained from your local school board.
Teaching more than one grade at a time or homeschooling with young children in the home can be a trial for many parents. Careful planning can help ease the situation. Try staggering the subjects so that individual attention can be given to one child while the others are working on assignments that do not require constant guidance. Little ones should be provided with activities to occupy their time during the school period. This could be a safe place to play or a desk in the classroom area to color and draw. Older children could also help younger ones with their studies. This approach helps the elder siblings learn mentoring skills.
All struggles can be overcome with patience and planning. However, sometimes these trials can be overwhelming. Homeschooling is not meant for everyone. If you find that educating at home is just not for you take heart in the knowledge that you gave it your best, and find another alternative for your children. Each family must make the choice that is right for them.
