Cracked foot pads in dogs: Causes and treatments

by Bridie Cavanaugh

Created on: May 06, 2009

Dogs' feet are in constant contact with the ground and any ground coverings. They walk directly on any chemicals we use to clean, accidental spills on the sidewalk and debris on the streets. Their feet are tough but sometimes not tough enough and foot pads will become irritated and

cracked. Dogs will often then chew on the sore foot and thereby exacerbate the problem.

Causes/Diagnosis of Cracked Paw Pads

1. Chemicals - The chemicals we use to maintain our floors, carpets and gardens can irritate paws. Chemicals are also found on the street, especially in the winter when chemicals are used to melt ice and snow.

2. Allergies - Cracked and irritated foot pads can be an indication of allergies. Your dog could have seasonal allergies, such as a grass or pollen reaction, or may be allergic to something in their food. Grain is a common source of food allergies. Your veterinarian may choose to take a blood sample or skin test to ascertain the specific allergy.

3. Yeast Infection - Similar to a human contracting Athletes Foot, a dog may acquire a chronic yeast infection. A veterinarian can diagnose a yeast infection by evaluating skin samples taken from the paw.

4. Zinc Deficiency - Zinc deficiencies are common in certain breeds (Great Danes, Dobermans, Beagles, Shepherds, German Short Haired Pointers, Poodles, Husky, and Malamute). They may also be caused by diet. Diagnosis usually requires a review of the symptoms, history, breed, diet, age and perhaps a skin biopsy.

5. Nasodigital Hyperkeratosis (Canine Foot Pad Disease) - This disease can affect both the nose and paw pads and is usually found in older dogs. The tough, outer covering, of the paw pads (keratin) grows excessively causing cracking and irritation. This disease is usually diagnosed by symptoms and a review of a paw pad sample.

6. Autoimmune Disease - Pemphigus is a skin based auto-immune disease which results in pus filled sores developing on paw pads, bridge of nose and ears. These sores cake over, dry and crack. This disease is diagnosed by a sample review of the infected skin.

7. Injury - Your dog may step on something sharp when outside. Injuries are more common in the winter when snow and ice may stick to the hair in between the pads causing irritation and cracking.

Treatment of Cracked Paw Pads - A paw injury can be very difficult to heal. As your dog walks around they are putting pressure on the wound and may be letting bacteria into the crack. While your dog is being treated to repair paw cracks they should
