The fact that the full moon affects humans has long been
proven. The question is; to what degree does it affect humans? There are legends as well as facts that the full moon affects humans psychologically, physically, spiritually and emotionally. We already know that the moon controls the tide, so if humans are 80% water it is only logical to conclude that the moon would have some affect on the human mind and body.
There are more violent crime reports during a full moon. There are more psychotic episodes during a full moon. More babies are born during a full moon, There are more admittances to the hospitals during a full moon. Post-operative bleeding occurs more nearer to a full moon. People who have depresssion and are bi-polar experience worse symptoms during a full moon.
Then, there are the legends such as the Werewolf which is a legend in many countries. It's never been proven, but it has never been disproved either. Man has long been fascinated with the moon and the effect it has on humans and there is good reason for that; man has been acutely aware that there are effects for centuries.
There are some that theorize the reason scientists don't go to great lengths to prove a connection between the cosmos and humans is it would be delving into astrology.
Astrology and scientists have never gotten along quite well. In the 1960's a scientist by the name of Michael Gauquelin set forth to proof that the moon or any other planetary formation had no effect on humans. He was sure that proving his theory would be extremely easy. Instead, his extensive research proved that the planetary positions as well as the placement of the moon had a great deal of an effect on people including characteristics that are more common when born in certain planetary arrangements.
When contemplating any theory you must have the folklore as well as the science to back it up and when it comes to the full moon and the effect on humans, both are present. More exhaustive studies are not done by scientists (and reported honestly) because the connection does prove to be true.
Again Astrology is not a popular word among scientists.
Despite what science tells us and despite what legend tells us; we will continue to believe what we want to believe about the effects of the full moon on humans. Still, the stories and the legend alone can be quite compelling and when the science proves there is something to it, the excitement and wonder just grows. The question may not be does the full moon effect humans but rather; Do humans believe that the full moon effects humans.
