This is a curious question. It might be better known as an issue that takes place between the secular and the faith based world, often with a stereotypical line drawn between atheist and believers. When it comes to our own origins science faces the notion that it is eliminating God from the picture. Making this a debate of two different ideas and whether they can coexist only appears to be relevant until one describes a hammer and argues the nonexistence of the man who used one to frame a house.
However, this is exactly the debate that we have on our hands today. Usually filled with emotional responses and minds made up long before anyone has checked the facts to see what is really being said.
The attached language of Darwinism seems to have created a built in idea that science has somehow become an authority on the subject of the divine. What probably is at the heart of this idea has more to do with how an ancient book like Genesis is translated and a predisposition for believing in a young earth creation. Science on the other hand requires billions of years instead of seven days, so a rational man of faith has to defend this most of all. Yet even the arguments against Darwinism contain a great deal of the same ideas, only with a slightly different language on a different timeline. A good example of this is "speciation" with the young earth explanation of "kinds." As Shakespeare wrote, "A rose by any other name is still a rose," and whatever the term being used, it does coexist.
Yet the faith based world is divided on this subject. There are great deals of people who believe in God and find no contradiction with having world view given to them by science. Scientists, like Hugh Ross, work very hard at showing that the Big Bang and Evolution provide insight into an Almighty Creator. Astronomical odds of chance are used to underline the idea of design. This point of view in faith has led others to take another look at a book like Genesis and find new insights into linguistics and how ancient languages should be translated.
Today there is a mission on both sides of this issue in the faith based world. Each side is producing information to support their point of view. The young earth anti-Darwinism crowd often rallies behind a faith that demands ignorance, satisfied with only a mystery that faith itself can supply. The power of this argument is that it is often connected to a message that makes believing a necessity on an eternal level. If someone wants
