Over the years, I will admit, there have been a multitude of "wolves in sheep's clothing" all of which could fall under the heading of being Prophets for Profit. Indeed, it did feel as though the scams under the guise of being religious people were coming one right after another. In my opinion, the fact that we get taken in by these charlatans is pretty much our own fault. We are ignorant of what our Bibles say and as a result we are fooled by every scam artist who thinks he can exact a tribute from us. The Bible clearly states that we, as God's people, are killed because of a lack of knowledge. It then becomes extremely important that we gain as much knowledge as we possibly can so that we do not fall victim to those who would impersonate godliness.
I believe that there are in fact real prophets in this world today, or more correctly, those who are able to prophesy. Beginning in the Old Testament, the Book of Joel, Chapter 3 and verses 28 and 29 the Bible says -
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
Also upon the servants and the handmaidens in those days will I pour out my spirit."
You will have to read the entire chapter in order to realize the context here but what I am getting from this is that Joel is speaking a prophesy concerning the last days and he says, in part, that the sons and the daughter shall prophesy. That is to say that they will speak words of prophetic utterance.
Again, in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2 and verses 16 and 17 it says
"But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy"
In this particular day and age, if we are not living in the last, or even the final days, then when will we? Certainly we are in the final days before the end of this age and Jesus returns. And notice that it says that in these last/final days that people will prophecy. I am not at all certain that there are those whose sole ministry is to be a prophet but I do know that people do speak prophesy in these modern days.
In I Corinthians 14:27 the Bible says
"If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret."
In our modern day and age the above verse describes how prophesy is supposed
