The Squirrel Apartment
On a path by the river
is an old knotty tree.
It's inhabited by critters.
Look closely .You'll see!
There are four holes in this tree
with a squirrel in each place.
Look closer my friend.
You'll see every face!
Inside each apartment
is a neat, little bed,
some cupboards with nuts in,
a pillow for each head.
A carpet of leaves,
red, yellow and green.
The coziest room,
that you ever have seen!
One squirrel is a messpot.
The others will tell.
His place is untidy,
and messy as well!
"Get out", said the others,
and get a new broom!
Find some nice things
and fix up your room!"
He left the apartment,
his friends scolding him.
" I'll show the others.
I'll have the best limb!"
Soon he returned with
his arms full of things.
He had pretty blue flowers,
and many white strings.
He made a new broom
with the strings that he had.
He swept his room nicely.
It was looking not bad.
He stacked up the nuts
in a neat little pile.
With the flowers on the table
he started to smile.
He looked around
at his nice little room.
The others were coming.
Not a moment too soon.
They looked all around,
with surprise on their faces.
The room looked so good,
it had lost all the traces
of the messy room
it had been before.
They smiled as they left,
closing the door.
He sat down for a rest.
He was tired, you see.
He could hear outside
loud pounding on the tree!
He opened the door,
to see who was there.
His friends were outside,
holding a square.
They hung it on a strong, little hook.
He went outside to have a good look.
"You've done a good job,
now here's your reward!"
He read what it said,
on the piece of square board.
"Skippy's Place" is what he read.
They laughed out loud and patted his head!
