Novel excerpts: Uncertainty

She gathered all of her belongings and put them in a small case, she would run as fast as she could away from the problems that seemed to keep coming at her and coming at her.

Today would be the first day of the rest of her life, she thought to her self, the old clich that she had heard for so long. But where would she go and who would she run to, that was now the question.

Not much money in her pocket, just the little she had left over from the last time she had helped Mrs. Gregory out, the old woman was a mean cuss, but she had always been generous when it came to paying for help. She counted it out, twenty one dollars, that would have to do, until she could find a job somewhere, she would sleep at a shelter if she had too for a couple of days and they would provide food, so she had heard, anything would be better than staying where she felt she was not wanted.

At seventeen, she had been passed between parents since she was two, when her mother and father and divorced, she lived with her mother during the week and then on Friday's would meet her father and his new teenybopper wife at quick stop half way between her two parents homes for a quick weekend with her father, then during the summer they would swap, the week with her dad, and weekends with her mom, this went on until her father and stepmother had their third child and were to busy to take the time for her except on holidays. He had told her mother that he thought it was best if she spent more time with her own mother because she needed her influence on her life, right, he just did not want her anymore.

Her mother had remarried and her stepfather had three children, two boys and a girl, the girl was older and had married about three years before, three and four years younger that herself, and were busy with ball and other school activities that kept both her mother and stepfather busy, she was left out of everything. Even when her prom had come around, her mother did not even go with her to buy a dress, or help her with her hair. Her mother had other things do that revolved around her stepbrothers.

The problems started shortly after that, she had called her dad to see if he would give her some money to help pay for all of the things she would need for prom, and then for graduation. He told her that he was strapped right then, but he would get her some cash in a couple of weeks, and assured her that he would be their on grad night.
