The skies are gray, the rain is falling, and the kids are complaining that they're bored. What's a mom or dad to do? Not to worry. A rainy day shouldn't be a cause for despair. There are a number of creative and fun activities that both you and your children can enjoy together on a day when the sun simply refuses to shine.
-Play outside together.
Many children would be thrilled at the opportunity to splash in the puddles, and to enjoy the experience of being outdoors during a gently falling rain; provided there are no signs of thunder and lightning, of course. A good raincoat and a pair of rubber boots are all that are needed. The rest can be left up to your child's, and your own, imaginative and creative spirit.
-Bake together.
Baking is a wonderful way in which to to keep children occupied on a rainy day. It is the perfect chance to spend some quality time with your child, and it is educational as well. The priceless feelings of comfort and joy that are brought forth within children are beyond compare when they are eating delicious, homemade treats, cuddling up on the couch with a parent, and watching the rain come down.
-Do arts and crafts together.
Paint, crayons, markers, clay, pipe cleaners, and construction paper. The list of arts and crafts supplies is endless. Drawing, painting, coloring, and craft projects are a wonderful way to allow a child's creativity to shine through. Arts and crafts have the potential of keeping children entertained for hours, and they give both parents and their children a finished product to be proud of.
-Play games together.
All children love to play games, especially when a parent is involved. It is an opportunity to focus all of your attention on your child, and, at the same time, to help him or her learn teamwork and fair play. Board games, card games, and games such as indoor hide and seek or charades can offer a child and parent a great deal of pleasure, and a chance to connect with one another.
A rainy day can prove to be a memorable, fun-filled day for both parents and children alike. A little pre-planning, on the part of a parent, can go a long way toward always being prepared when the rain begins to fall. Spend the day enjoying your children, and watch as they enjoy spending time with you. These are the days in which memories are made and good times are shared. No amount of rain can dampen the spirits of children and parents engaged in activities which promote bonding, creativity, and love.
