Being married to someone who is staying 8 hours away (by bus)/12 hours away (by train), we did a lot of travelling. And since I've had my baby, we have made numerous trips back home visiting her grandparents since she was about 2 months old.
At first, I do have doubts and jitters travelling for the first time with a baby. I did not know what to expect throughout the journey. I was also praying hard that the journey would go smoothly.
So what did I pack in a diaper bag for the trip:
Diapers (3-4 diapers)
Disposable changing pads (it would be easier when you could just dispose them after use)
A bag of toiletries for the baby which include dettol hand sanitizer, medicated oil, tissues, diaper cream, a pack of wet wipes, anti-mosquito wipes, plastic bags and zipper bags
A change of clothes for the baby which include: either a romper of a set of clothes, socks/booties, face towel
A shawl (to cover up for breastfeedings)
Umbrella
Toys (eg. a rattle to keep her entertained)
A sling/carrier
These are the items I usually have in a bag I keep with me everywhere. But I do also pack separately (in luggage) :
2 big pack of baby wipes
Diapers (10-12); just in case you couldn't step out to buy a fresh bag of diapers
Another bag of toiletries for the baby: baby body & hair wash, medicated oil, nightime baby wash & oil, baby oil, anti-mosquito baby lotion, cotton buds, nail clippers, baby powder
Baby health book/record (just in case she got sick during the trip; the clinic will have all the information on hand)
When we travelled last, she's already 8 months old. So we included these in my diaper bag:
Her favorite stuffed toys & rattles
Books
Non-spill sippy cup filled with water
Rusks
1 or 2 jarred food (I have been feeding my daughter with homemade baby recipes. But to avoid inconvenience, we bought jarred foods for the trips. But beforehand, ensure that your baby have tasted the baby food before buying them for the trips. Your baby might or might not like the food so it will be wasted if she refuse the jarred foods that you have bought)
I also packed 4-5 jarred baby foods in my luggage bag to last me throughout the trip. Just in case I couldn't find the similar jarred food that your baby like.
These are my personal list that I have always packed without fail for any long trip with my daughter. And she's has always been fun to travel with!
