Using your own life as inspiration for comedic writing

When you are looking for something to write about, using your own life is a wonderful means of inspiration. It is great because it is your own life, you know the events that took place, and only you know the true meaning of what happened to you. And since you are using your own life, you can put those events into whatever context you need them to be in. If you want them to prove a serious point you can do that, if you want them to serve as a metaphor you can do that too. Best of all though, is that if you can laugh at yourself, you can turn your life into comedic writing too.

There is nothing better in comedy than a well-timed story or joke. Telling a story about your own life helps you write the story because you were there. You know how things happened, how the timing was, and if people laughed or not. Your own life is a great testing ground for how well a joke will fare, because you know how it happened. Since you know the joke plays well, and can be told well, you can go ahead and use the story and not have to worry.

Using your own life for comedic writing is cool too because you don't have to come up with any one-liners. You already have the one-liners down from your story, and you can use them at will, and again you will know if they are funny or not. There is no looking for a one-liner, or thinking of one all night, just to hear that it was no good, or that you shouldn't ever say those words again. Since it is from your own life you know the outcome of your line.

When you use your own life for comedic inspiration, you can use your embarrassing stories and pass them off as just funny. If you are a good sport, you can use your bad moments, and turn them into comedic gold. You never know when someone will be reading your story, and will nod in approval knowing that they weren't the only person to try something crazy. It can be therapeutic to get rid of your own burdens onto the paper as a form of comedy.

On a more serious level, they say that comedy usually does come from truamatic moments. Most comedians they say are just trying to put a funny spin on some serious issues that they have had to deal with. If you look at most comedy routines, they center on around everyday issues, or after a tragedy a comedian might make his whole routine about the days events. It turns a tragedy into something that you can laugh at for a minute, and get your mind off things.

Your own life is a good source of inspiration no matter what the genre. They say that a good story can be found at every level of your life. Any experience that you have can be used as a source to write about. Whether it be good, bad, or ugly, you can find some solace in the fact that your life could be your inspiration one day.
