The onset of menopause in women can range between ages 30 to 60, although it typically averages out at age 50. Still, the odd younger woman has been reported. And we cannot overlook such life events as premature ovarian failure and hysterectomy. Menopause is generally thought of as a phenomenon lasting several years but, actually, it spans just one day. It occurs the day following the last period, marking the first of many days without menstruation. Strangely, menopause can only be pinpointed after a year without menstruating.
Most understand menopause to mean the overall experience, covering perimenopause, menopause and finally post menopause. Perimenopause lasts about six years, leading up to the onset of menopause. Symptoms of irritability, sleeplessness, vaginal dryness, weight gain and hot flashes may be experienced during this time. Though there are those unfortunate enough to suffer all of these ill-effects and more, there are still a number of women who experience few if any of these symptoms. I don't know about you, but I'm crossing my fingers and toes starting now. That being said, even if you're not blessed with a symptom free menopause, it doesn't mean that you have to suffer.
Menopause has been around for some time and in that time great strides have been made towards successful management. You'll notice I avoid using the word treatment here, because menopause is a natural process; it isn't a sickness. All woman must eventually go through this life change, and it can no more be treated than the aging process can be stopped in its tracks. I know, your minds probably jump to medication at this point, and there are several options along that line, but there are things, such as exercising regularly and making changes to your diet, that are equally beneficial.
Regular exercise can help you maintain your body weight and relieve stress, while simultaneously increasing stamina. Eating a healthier diet plays a huge role in maintaining your weight, but it also has an overall calming effect. When your body is happy, you'll find that you are too. Also, it has been found that certain things, such as alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, even smoking can result in more frequent hot flashes; so moderation or even abstinence might be your best bet. Luckily, there are more beneficial nutrients than there are negative ones.
