How to buy furniture for small spaces

Decorating can be a chance to express our imaginations, to figuratively paint a canvas with furniture, design accoutrements and other accessories. When embellishing a small space, frame all other aspects of design with the use of scale. A focus on scale for each design element, will complete a perfect portrait for small space realities.

The first aspect of design to consider is how the space will be used. Will your space be a reading nook in the alcove of a bedroom? Or, is it a quiet place for children to do homework in the kitchen? Maybe your space is begging for a reason to be furnished, and doesn't yet have a designation. Perhaps, your small space is a tiny bedroom for guests and you want them to be comfortable, but not squished. Whatever the case, you can create a unique and inspired space by following a few simple ideas.

Take special consideration when selecting colors for your space. Loud colors like red and yellow, are too bold for a space that could use all the enhancement it can get. Muted tones with splashes of contrasting but complimentary colors, will create a space of warmth and invitation. Tan and black colors work well together and add sophistication to small bathroom spaces or quiet reading places.

Another important design aspect to consider when decorating your small space is to define what style this space with exude. Do you already have a design theme in place around your home or business? It's best to incorporate that theme into your small space. Traditional or Contemporary? Modern or European? Country or Victorian? These styles will not easily mix together, so take care to select one theme. You can always incorporate one or two pieces from another style group to personalize your space, but mixing a Craftsman-style home with French-gothic living room furnishings, will be unsettling.

Also, use furnishings that match your function. As an example, a reading nook has to be warm and comfortable. Select an overstuffed leather chair and ottoman. A knit blanket and down-feather pillows. A well-placed mirror will enhance this space and make it appear larger. Using colors in rich hues like: forest green, chocolate brown and cherry red are classic.

In your small space take care to group decorations to scale. A space won't be inviting if you have a large couch grouped with a tiny tea table and delicate lamp. Stand back from your work and make sure it's just right. Cut out pictures, measure desired items and, if possible, put these measurements on a design program on your computer. Don't rush. Why go to the expense if the furnishings will not work?

The most important thing is to have fun. This is your space. Make it an expression of yourself. If you are eclectic, make your space eclectic and beautiful. Capture your favorite elements in a grouping as individual as you are.
