Embracing a Freelance Writing Career

You wake up in the early morning dawn. Your computer quietly hums, almost as if it is calling to you while you make the coffee. The aromatic scent of musky flavored water filters through the house, and your mind begins to wander to the words you need to say. You are a freelance writer, not by choice, but by design. You were made to express the words upon each page, as surely as dancers need to leap through the air and take flight.

Oh sure, there are plenty of reasons to justify becoming a freelance writer. You can claim the luxury of deciding your own schedule, choosing your own work, and making a difference in the world. These are all true to form, not merely for freelance writers, but for everyone who has a passion deep inside of them. They are the mechanics of why people do the things they do, and without them, no one would probably bother doing much of anything at all.

So why would anyone want to be a freelance writer? The answer isn't as difficult as you might expect. In truth, only a handful of people receive the honors and recognition they deserve. Freelance writing is like any other line of work, complete with pros and cons. It can be challenging and frustrating, as well as downright boring. Yet people still choose to try their hand at it, hoping to find the perfect job that everyone knows exist, without ever actually achieving exclusive results.

The only reason to become a freelance writer is because you can't deny who you are in the depths of your soul. You have a passion deep within you that must be validated. If you refuse to acknowledge the very essence of your being, misery will drive you insane. True freelance writers don't choose to write; they are born to write as sure as teachers need to share their knowledge with the world.

Ah yes, you know it's true, as you prepare another story that must be told. The task is to make it audience specific, apply the rules of grammar, and minimize the word count. It's not the greatest novel of all time, the one you've been planning to write for the past few years. It does however help pay the bills, even if you have to stay up all night completing the assignment. It also seems to temper your skills, as you reflect on the publisher's guidelines.

Your passion gains a sense of balance as it meets the world, inviting readers to appreciate your insight and knowledge. You have mastered the task at hand, influenced an audience, and been true to yourself, all in response to the necessity of becoming a freelance writer.
