Okeanos
Your vastness I cannot fathom; your depth I cannot touch, defining my humanness. Your complexity is magnified by each ripple and wave. Yet, your sureness of returning to shore, of following patterns of the moon is trusted. You offer and are capable of taking.
Might I not forget my meekness.
Though I cannot see your trenches, with faith I know they lie waiting, containing great sites and adventures meant to explore. Within their majesty are secrets to uncover, for men who are enlightened to know more. I am reminded of acting with caution when not following your laws, as the remains of others lay beneath your movement, your power not to be taken for granted.
May I remember all cannot be seen.
The living within your water, both large and small, shows me that the cycle of life is ever present within you. You fashion your inhabitants with barbs on some as protection, a sting on others, teeth, and camouflage on still more. Each its own place in the hierarchy of life, knowing it has its time, and knowing it serves its purpose; just as with my own life.
I pray I find my place among greatness.
The expanse where you meet the horizon shows me that which I have yet to discover and worlds I have yet to know and understand. I can voyage to see, if I remain within its natural laws, do not prejudge, accept what I find as it is supposed to be, and not subject myself as ruler over it.
I search to be humble.
I hear you, this ocean, as you have much to teach me. I hear you on the wind. You whistle tales of Odysseus and his wanderings. You whisper legends of the albatross. You speak of pirates' booty. You scream of storms that rage. You sing of lost voyages never returned. From these messages I know what is possible and what is uncertain.
I long to be quiet and listen.
I know you give life as easily as you take it. I know you are not to be taken for granted, oh sea. Your expanse and quantity covering three-fourths of the Earth's surface reminds me how small I am upon this land. Your geographical divisions lets me know that I will find you wherever I go, and that you are part of all, as you possess seventy percent of the land on which I live.
I wish to be conscious of where I venture.
Your greatness that encompasses our planet reminds me of years before and years still to come. Your immense space tells me of the limitless intentions of your inspiration, you, the principal part of our hydrosphere, your energy intoxicating and contagious.
I seek to revere my history.
You surround
