Testimonies: Pets as part of the family

stood on their hind legs (being Nubians, this put them at over 5' tall) and suddenly they both came at him at a run, of course when the 2 oldest goats started running at him, the 2 youngest also joined in. He at that time realized, his "play" had become a little more than he anticipated and he ran for his car. I can still see him with his long, lanky legs running across my back yard with the 4 Nubian milk goats close on his heels. He reached the safety of his car and the 4 goats circled him. I had to rescue him by putting the "girls" back in their pen so he could get out of his car.

I at that time not only had the goats, but also had dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and chickens. I had a mare that could escape even the most secure of pens. One day, she escaped and ran down the road. Now we of course lived in a rural area and thankfully there wasn't much traffic on the road. I grabbed by infant son and down the road after her we went. I reached a field down the road, and there she was, running free, with the wind in her mane and tail, head held high, thoroughly enjoying her romp through the local farmer's winter rye grass field. My thought of course was "if this farmer sees the damage she is doing to his field, he will probably sue us". So there I am, in the field with my infant son on my hip, calling to her and she of course is ignoring me completely. I finally realized, I was not going to catch her by calling to her and so we walked home. At 4:00pm, my daughter's school bus arrived and as my daughter ran down the drive way, she was yelling, "Mom, Dawn is out and walking down the road on the other side of the field!" I told her I knew and I was going to try and catch her with sweet feed and that I needed her to stay with her brother while I tried to catch Dawn. My daughter ran to the house and I proceeded down the driveway to the road to catch my elusive Dawn. Upon my reaching the hard surface road, low and behold, who do you think I saw but Dawn, meandering down the road to the driveway. She realized when she saw the school bus that it was feeding time and she was on her way home as she was not going to miss out on her sweet feed!. She walked up to me and I grabbed her halter and walked her to the stall, fed her and secured the rest of the animals for the night.

This same mare also came onto the back porch at 4:30am one morning and was looking at me through the window. I put my boots on, grabbed the flashlight and walked her to the barn, (at 4:30 am, it is still
