Just make sure that there are no gaps between the bed and wall or mattress and headboard, baby is sleeping on his back, pillows and blankets are kept away from his face and avoid taking medicines, drugs or alcohol that may induce drowsiness. If you or your partner are heavy sleepers, it is best not to co-sleep.
Co-sleeping allows breast-feeding mothers to feed baby with little effort. Parents that are bottle-feeding can leave a jug of warm water and bottles containing the pre-measured amount of formula next to the bed so that they do not have to make any trips to the kitchen. Keeping diapering supplies and a diaper pail in your room will also help.
If you have the money available, you can also have a baby sitter watch your little one so that you can have some free time. Use the time to nap or catch up on chores so that you will have less to do later. If you are uncomfortable having a sitter for your baby so soon, consider hiring someone to come tidy up your house. This will lessen the load of things that you are required to do and open up some time.
Caring for yourself is part of caring for your baby. With lack of sleep, you may experience emotional problems, weaker immune system, irritability, forgetfulness and post partum depression. Many new parents do not realize how important there sleep really is and do not make it a top priority. Sleep loss can affect every area of your life, so do not sell your self short. Do the best you can to get the sleep you need.
