College sororities and fraternities cause more harm than good on campus in my opinion based on the individuals life style and the people involved in that persons life.
If the student was a nerd to begin with, then the sororities and frats will only do well for them because they are now making something out of a life that was nothing to begin with. Nerds tend to live hermit like lives having next to no friends and definitely no loved one other than family waiting for them back at home.

If the person on the other hand had a life to begin with for example, if they have a loved one other than family waiting back at home for them and they have now become very active with their new college friends, then the potential of doing more harm to the loved one at home only increases simply because they now would spend less time & communication with the loved one to make room for new time being spent with there new sorority / fraternity friends.

What good can come from pranks, drinking games, parties and sex other than the immediate pleasure gained by the college student them self?

The students' actions affect themselves as well as those around them, but at the time of their action they are not aware of this reality and the consequences seem too far away in the future to worry about it at the present time.

Sororities and Fraternities are families. Instantly the college student inherits new brothers and sisters seemingly overnight and for a weak minded, dependent individual the bond is too great to put into words. Try to explain this to an outsider or a loved one waiting back at home it is frankly impossible, this is how the harm that affects others begins.

Then there are the various campuses themselves, some have more rules than the most guarded prison while others tend to be as free as the wind in the sky. The college itself may contribute to both the harm and the good caused by various sororities & fraternities simply due to the amount or type of security used on and around the various campus grounds as well as the size of the property.

Last but not least is the illegal or underground activity that takes place both on and off campus, things such as hazing. If you want to talk about harm caused bye college brothers & sisters then all I can say is there are way too many secrets, way to many non tolerated activities and way too many unpublicized, indecent activities that take place amongst sororities and fraternities which need to come to and end.
