Bad day
I don't mean to be a downer. Everyone has bad days and good days. That's life. But this was the weirdest and worst by far. And then everything changed.
First of all, I had a horrible time trying to get myself out of bed in the morning. I was so tired that I shut the alarm off, put my head back down, and didn't move again for twenty minutes. Then I seriously considered going to work late or not at all, until I remembered I had an experiment to do that really needed an early start.
So I dragged myself out of bed, checked on my daughter in her crib, and then headed down the hall. As I did every morning, I quickly and randomly grabbed a shirt, pants and underwear out of the bureau in the laundry room. Then I went into the bathroom and plopped the pile of clothes down on the toilet and shut the door.
I always had this issue about being in the bathroom with the door open. If I was brushing my teeth or taking a shower, I couldn't see if someone walked up to the doorway. I didn't like that. It wasn't like I expect anyone but my husband to be walking around anyway, and I wouldn't ever expect him to step foot in the bathroom at 5 or 6am.
I guess my real issue was that I had an overactive imagination. I had this idea that maybe someone would get into the house and be hiding out in either the living room or the laundry room. I got other ideas too. These mainly stemmed from watching way too many horror movies and usually involved supernatural subjects like spirits. Once I even got the idea in my head that a wacky relative or ex might be hiding out and waiting for just the right moment to become reacquainted, weapon in hand. Crazy? You wouldn't have to convince me. The only thing crazier is to admit it.
So I jumped into the shower as usual, and finally started to wake up as I huddled under the warm spray. At first I was thinking about work and how I had to get to the lab as early as I could to start my experiment. I was also planning my method and thinking through the possible outcomes. The process had been performed many times in the past but the materials and results were changing as the technology was more fully developed. Things were going fine as I washed and thought, thought and washed.
The problems started when I dunked my head under the shower nozzle. As soon as I couldn't see or hear due to the sheet of water streaming down my head, I started having impossible visions. The usual would include the bathroom door handle ominously turning, the dead girl from The Ring'
