Freelance writers: How to get organized

Freelance writing is a very demanding career for most who follow it and one of the most important factors the freelance writer has to take in to account if they are to work effectively and be successful is how to oraganise their time to best effect. This is not a one off procedure and is something the freelance writer is always required to keep on top of.

The freelance writer does not have a salary or any other form of steady income. They write articles for such as newspapers, magazines or websites and receive payment for doing so. This means that in order to earn money simply to survive, the freelance writer has to make the very best use of any and all time available to them in which to write.

The freelance writer should in the first instance determine how much quality writing time they are likely to require on any one day when attempting to organise their time effectively. As this time does represent their working hours, it should be deemed to take precedence over almost any and all other considerations which have to be factored in to the bigger equation. This may mean postponing other tasks, cancelling them altogether or arranging for others to help with them. The writer has to be ruthless when organising their time in this way as avoidable distractions and interruptions are going to significantly impact their eventual income.

When the writing time has been set aside, the freelance writer should organise a place to write which will see them comfortable, perhpas likely to be inspired and where they are least likely to encounter interruption, either in the form of noise or from other people. This is very important also as the writing produced has to of course be of sufficient quality as to be publishable if it is to generate income.

The writer should then look at producing a schedule for their freelance writing, organised to take in to account such as deadlines, the revenue which it is likely to produce and any research time which is going to have to be allocated. This allows them to not only organise their time most efficiently but also - very importantly - to optimise it and ensure that as much revenue is generated in the longer term as possible.

The freelance writer should also take care to organise the writing space around them. They should if possible have it as free as possible of clutter and have all which they are likely to require during the writing process close to hand. Having to go off in search of a particular book which they regularly refer to or even such as a pen in the midst of writing an article can be very distracting and in extreme instances can lead to them losing their train of thought altogether.

By taking all of the above in to account and striving to ensure that the practises are adhered to, the freelance writer can best organise their writing time and take all necessary steps towards ensuring it is as productive as possible.
