Any decent hairstylist wants their client to be satisfied with the work they do, at the end of the day their business is dependent repeat business. However, sometimes the customer's desires can be misinterpreted and disaster can unfold. If you want to make sure you get the perfect hairstyle after every salon visit, it is vitally important that you know how to communicate effectively with your stylist.
Don't be shy when it comes to communicating with your hairstylist, they are there to help. Consider the following tips for effectively communicating with your hairstylist:
-Present your stylist with any pictures that effectively detail the cut, color or style you are after. People use very different terminologies to explain looks; this can take a lot of the misunderstanding out of the equation. However, remember that the stylist might not be able to make your hair look exactly like the picture because this is largely dependent on your hair's thickness, texture and natural color.
-Tell your stylist what you have both liked and disliked in past styles. This can help give the stylist a good idea on what to recommend if you want to try a new look.
-Give the stylist an honest estimate on how long you like to spend doing your hair each morning. A stylist will then be able to recommend hair styles that will suit your lifestyle.
-Always make sure you are in clear agreement over how much length will be coming off. A color or perm can usually be reversed, but length can not be re-attached (well not unless you want to get hair extensions). It is best to describe how much length you want off in a clear measurement term. "I want two inches off the bottom" is much clearer then "Just give it a trim".
-When you find a stylist that understands your needs try to stick with them. They will usually notate your requirements and communication will be easier in the future.
It is a good idea to visit several salons and ask for a free consultation before committing to one. This allows you to determine which stylist you are both most comfortable with and most confident in. The stylist also needs to fit within your budgetary constraints. Don't worry; there are good stylists to be found in all price brackets.
Finally, remember if you don't like the hairstyle you see unfolding make sure you tell the hairdresser straight away. The sooner you speak up, the greater you options will be when it comes to rectifying things.
