Seafood has always been a feature of the small coastal city of Newburyport, situated 38 miles northeast of Boston in the US state of Massachusetts. It had a strong fishing industry, as well as whaling and shipbuilding, in the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. Today it is a tourism center with many great seafood and other restaurants. If you plan to visit Newburyport, here are some seafood restaurants you might like to try.
Starboard Galley Restaurant, 55 Water Street
This restaurant in located in the historic port area on the waterfront not far from Customs House Maritime Museum and Newburyport's lighthouse. Its outdoor deck overlooks the Merrimack River just where it widens, an ideal spot to watch the boats passing by. The fish is fresh, usually having been caught that morning, and reasonably priced. The restaurant is noted for its friendliness and good service, and has been there for many years. All food is prepared to order.
The lunch menu includes a number of seafood dishes such as broiled salmon hollandaise with rice and vegetable for $9.99. A sandwich of haddock, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, plus fries and tartar sauce costs $8.99. Grilled tuna with cheese, tomato, fries, and pickle is $7.99. Or you can pick up a lobster roll with fries and pickle for $15.99. Clam, shrimp, and calamari baskets are also available. For dinner, you can order a seafood platter for $20.99, battered haddock at $12.99, deep sea scallops costing $16.99, shrimps for $13.99, and many other seafood meals. Apart from seafood, a variety of other food can be ordered. Beer, wine, and liquors can be purchased with the meal.
Starboard Galley Restaurant is open from 11.30am to 10pm for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The lounge is open to 1am. Parking is available on the street or in the parking lot behind the restaurant or the one near the tannery. Restaurant facilities are available for functions, including weddings.
Michael's Harborside Restaurant & Bar, 1 Tournament Wharf
This restaurant can be found near the bridge, in the historic port area of Newburyport. The site dates to the 17th century, when it first became a commercial fishing wharf. The building was a warehouse. Later the site became a mercantile center, then an eel farm, and then a center for tuna exports to Japan.
