In general, the topic of American politics must include a debate of some sort. When any political subject enters ones mind, a door opens up an argument. These arguments become the latest buzz such as bailouts, stimulus bills, campaigns, health care (swine flu), Obama, Bush, war, abortion, gay marriage, terrorists, climate change, economy or any other popular flavor of the day.
Today the question is: Are American citizens lowering their expectations of President Obama? Simply put, the answer is No.
Lets go back to Barack Obama's Speech at the 2004 DNC Convention, at a time when he was only known to local Chicago residents and practically unknown to the rest of the United States.
For those of you who may not remember, he blew everybody away with his speech about his life story and how it relates to the American dream. Ask yourselves, how high where your expectations of Obama back then? He reminded the nation that a government could intervene in people's lives and actually make a positive difference.
During Obama's time as a senator he convinced any person with a listening ear that change was necessary and that he was the person to get the ball rolling. This is how the beginning of hope began to engulf citizens and through years of campaigning ultimately grew into very intense expectations.
Then he became the American President at a time when crisis was extremely high and the following questions where being asked around the world:
1) Who will fix economic issues?
2) What will happen with the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq?
3) Who will go to bat for the big three automakers?
4) Will Osama bin Ladin be caught?
5) What will happen with foreign affairs?
6) Will dictatorship happen in America?
7) Are changes going to take place on the free trade front?
8) Will the rich be upset by tax changes and the middle class and poor rejoice?
9) Is another terrorist act waiting in the wings?
10) Will democrats and republicans finally have true partisanship?
The answers to all of these questions plus many more were all waiting to be answered by none other than President Obama. Like a super hero of some sort, he was expected to both save America and heal the world.
After his first hundred days in office, most people feel that he has done more than any other president in the history of the United States of America. However, because there are still major problems some feel perhaps he was overrated.
If in the next 100 days he continues to "heal the world" at the same rate as things are progressing now, then in the end he will have met and exceeded his expectations and the majority of American citizens will be better off then they could have ever expected.
