It is possible to write an effective article when there are no guidelines and only a title is provided. The best approach is to consider carefully where the article is to appear and who is going to be reading it.
Determine the Purpose of an Article:
An article can be written in whatever way you choose, but it is really important that an inappropriate article is not submitted to an ambiguous title, because of a misunderstanding about its purpose.
If an article has been commissioned, anything you know about the publication or website can provide some idea of who is the target audience, and how best to approach the topic in the title.
A title for a specialist publication or website may require an article to be written using technical terms or academic language. An article for general publication, or for a knowledge website, should clearly explain any specialist terms, so the meaning is clear to everyone who reads the article.
When an article is written to appear on a specific website, the main purpose could be to generate traffic from search results. For this purpose, keywords need to be included in the article. The most effective words or phrases will already appear in the title, so these should be repeated within the article. A keyword tool will provide a further selection of appropriate words to use.
Writing to a Title at Helium:
It is most important to note in which channel and sub-channel the Helium article title appears. For example, a different approach would be necessary for a title in the Internet Writing and Blogging sub-channel under Arts & Humanities, than for a title about blogging in the Web Marketing sub-channel under Business.
Many of the titles are open to different interpretations and points of view, but a Helium title will generally provide information as to how the article should be written.
Note The Exact Words Used in a Title:
"How To" in a title indicates that the article should be instructive. An effective article should inform the reader in a clear and precise way.
"Why You Should" in a title means it should be aimed at convincing the reader of the reasons for taking a course of action. An efffective article could be based on the opinion of the writer, but must back up opinion with facts and examples.
"How I" in a title requires use of first person singular. This type of article could be written effectively as a testimony or as a memoir.
"What is" or a "Why is" in a title means the article should be written in an impersonal style, without referring to "you" or "I". This type of article requires clear explanations and should provide reasons.
To be certain that you write an effective article, for any purpose, do make certain your article is not off topic, and that it is written in the style most appropriate for how a title is worded.
