Imagine opening your egg carton and finding it full of egg people! Creating unique and humorous " egg people" is not as hard as you think. This craft idea puts an interesting twist to the Easter tradition of decorating eggs.
Creating egg people can be time intensive. At the end of this article I will suggest alternatives for the busy mom and for trying this craft with large groups. If you are using craft ideas for birthday parties or girl scout meetings always try the craft yourself before committing to do it with the children. That way you can determine if it really is appropriate for your gathering.
Supplies :
1.Carton of Eggs from grocery store. ( plus some extras!)Try and find the cardboard container not the Styrofoam.
2. Sewing pin or needle.
3. Paint, markers, brushes, sponges, water and paper towels
4. Googly eyes, hats, and other accessories. These can be found at your local craft store.
5. Glue
Directions:
You are going to remove the contents from the egg and use the shell to decorate. Your egg people will permanently sit in the carton, so instruct the children to decorate their egg people's new home. Cardboard containers are easier to paint and decorate than the Styrofoam containers.
Insert pin in bottom of egg. Turning the pin will help "drill" a hole in the shell. After the pin has broken through the shell, widen the hole until it is about an inch in diameter. Shake the contents of the egg into a bowl for later use. If the egg contents do not easily shake out, carefully increase the size of the hole.
Gently rinse out the interior of the egg and place on a paper towel to dry. After 20 minutes, shake excess water from interior of egg. Repeat until all eggs are drained and dry.
If you are going to paint eggs, do so before placing them in their decorated carton. Once you place the eggs in the carton, they should stay there.
Place eggs, with the pin hole side down, in carton. Decorate with googly eyes, hat, bows or what ever you have found at the craft store.
Make eggs for dinner.
If you are working with a large group of children you may want to buy garden eggs to decorate. These are available through craft stores and will be found in the garden accessory aisle. Plastic eggs can be substituted, but make sure your glue works on the plastic surface.
If different families are involved, buy the smallest egg cartons you can find. If you choose not to use cartons, check your local thrift store for small baskets or boxes that can serve as the egg people's new home. If you are trying this craft with your own children, all the eggs can live together in one egg carton.
This craft teaches children how to work with delicate objects. Even Mom may break some eggs, so have a few extras around.
This craft will give you an Easter decoration for years to come. Have fun.
